Long-time member Carol Bessette is now known as a certified master tour guide with over twenty years’ experience showing Washington sites to visitors. She is also known for her Spies of Washington tours, featuring the homes, offices, and drop sites of major and minor espionage figures over the years. But before that, she was an Air Force intelligence officer for 25 years, entering the military when it was far from welcoming to women. She served for thirteen months in Vietnam, arriving shortly after the Tet Offensive. Over the years of her career, she witnessed the gradual greater acceptance of women, and more professional doors opening, but, as the headlines of today indicate, not all problems have been solved. Carol will discuss her experiences, and the path that led her to WNDC.
