Deborah Tannen, author of The New York Times bestseller You Just Don’t Understand, will talk about her new book You’re the Only One I Can Tell: Inside the Language of Women’s Friendships. Based on stories and conversations gleaned while interviewing eighty women ranging in age from 9 to 97 – stories that are as amusing as they are revealing – Tannen illustrates patterns of communication and mis-communication that affect friendships at different stages of women’s lives. In her talk, she also will explore how insights into women’s friendships shed light on the double bind that affects women in positions of authority, and the role it played in the 2016 election. For example, girls’ expectations that friends be “the same,” seen in comments like, “I feel the same way,” and “I know what you mean, the same thing happened to me,” can lead to resentment of girls who stand out—and the paradox that popular girls are often disliked. Tannen will show how such examples of girls’ and women’s friendships hold keys to the double bind that confronts women in authority, and to many of the reactions to Hillary Clinton.
The book will be available for purchase and signing.
