Dedicated in 1932 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Folger Shakespeare Library is an Elizabethan monument with a neoclassical exterior. Outside, its white marble harmonizes with nearby buildings, such as the Library of Congress, the Capitol, and the Supreme Court. Inside, the design evokes Tudor England, with oak paneling, ornamental floor tile, and high plaster ceilings. The Folger building is best known for the Shakespeare bas-reliefs along its north façade.
This special tour will include the Exhibition Hall, discussion of the collection, history of the Library, and a segment on the Elizabethan Theatre. Most special, we will view “First Folio! Shakespeare’s American Tour,” created to celebrate the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death. The Library sent First Folios to all 50 states, Puerto Rico, and Washington, DC. This exhibition celebrates their return to the Folger, and is the largest ever display of First Folios in a single venue.
PRICE: $25 Members; $30 Non-members (includes lunch); $10 Tour only (Tour limited to 20 participants)
