Jennifer L. Lawless, professor of government at American University and director of its Women & Politics Institute. She is the author of Becoming a Candidate: Political Ambition and the Decision to Run for Office(2012) and the co-author of Running from Office: Why Young Americans Are Turned Off to Politics (2015) and It Still Takes a Candidate: Why Women Don’t Run for Office (2010).

Her work has appeared in many scholarly journals, such as the American Journal of Political Science, and her articles have been quoted in in the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, the Washington Post, and television news programs such as the CBS Evening News, ABC World News Tonight, CNN.com, and MSNBC.com. She is also a recognized speaker on electoral politics. In 2006, Lawless ran in the Democratic Primary for the U. S. House of Representatives in Rhode Island’s Second Congressional District.
