Julie Burkhart, who leads the Trust Women Foundation in Wichita, Kansas, seeks to advance the work of Dr. George Tiller, who was shot in the head by Scott Roeder while Tiller was ushering at his church’s services in Wichita, Kansas, in 2009. Dr. Tiller, who operated a clinic providing late-term abortions, died trying to protect a woman’s right to choose.
Tiller was hailed a “hero who ranks alongside Susan B. Anthony and Martin Luther King Jr.” Tiller had been stalked by “protesters” using gunshots and fire-bombings in an attempt to close down his clinic. But Tiller bravely refused. One time, after the clinic was destroyed by a firebomb in 1986, Dr. Tiller—labeled by Bill O’Reilly as “Tiller, the Baby Killer” —displayed a sign reading “Hell no, we won’t go.”
Tiller’s practice began after he heard about a woman who died from a back-alley abortion. Burkhart will discuss her efforts to continue Tiller’s work and current challenges to reproductive rights.
