Heurich House, built in 1892-94, preserves the legacy of Christian Heurich, a self-made businessman who came from Germany to America in 1866. As owner of the Chr. Heurich Brewing Company, he became the District’s second largest landowner and largest non-governmental employer. The 31-room mansion is notable for technological innovations and original interiors. Features include full indoor plumbing, circulating hot water heat, central vacuum system, venting skylight, elevator shaft, pneumatic and electric communication systems, and gas and electric lighting fixtures. It is replete with hand-carved wood, fireplaces with individually carved mantles and cast bronze fire backs, hand-painted ceiling canvases, luxurious furnishings, and original turn-of-the-century Heurich family collections. Oktoberfest at WNDC will feature German beer tasting and food, with cash bar for German and other wines.
