March was a big month for U.S.-Israeli relations and for the Middle East. On March 3, Prime Minister Netanyahu addressed a joint session of the U.S. Congress to oppose an Obama-Administration-backed deal on Iran’s nuclear program. On March 17, Israel held parliamentary elections, and the newly elected Benjamin Netanyahu is now in the process of forming a new coalition government. On April 1, the Palestinian Authority is scheduled to join the International Criminal Court, opening the door to possible international sanctions against Israel.
WNDC member Warren Clark, husband of Betsy Spiro Clark, and Alan Elsner, Vice President of J Street for Communications will assess the impact of these developments on U.S.-Israeli relations, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and in the broader Middle East. Ambassador Clark is a retired Foreign Service officer who served in the Middle East, Africa, and at the United Nations. Since 2008, he has been Executive Director of Churches for Middle East Peace, a coalition of national church groups that conducts education and advocacy to end the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
