In 1955, James Baldwin wrote this: “In America, life seems to move faster than anywhere else on the globe and each generation is promised more than it will get: which creates in each generation, a furious bewildered rage, the rage of people who cannot find solid ground beneath their feet.”
My aim this evening in the second year of the so-called Age of Trump is to persuade you that the diagnosis that Baldwin offered back in 1955 remains apt today – the essential problem we confront in our present crisis is the difficulty we Americans have in finding something solid to stand on, with many of our fellow citizens expressing their furious bewildered rage by electing Donald Trump president.
In short, Trump is not the problem. He is merely symptom or consequence of several problems that existed long before he appeared on the political scene and that developments in recent decades have served to exacerbate.
The book America’s War for the Greater Middle East: A Military History will be available for purchase and signing.
