Timed for February “Black History Month,” celebrated journalist and author April D. Ryan, White House bureau chief and correspondent for American Urban Radio Networks, will talk about race in America, from a Black mother’s perspective, at the dawn of the post-Obama era. And it turns out that mothers are on the front lines of racial revolution, and reconciliation.
Her first book,The Presidency in Black and White (2015) examined race in America through her own experience as a White House reporter. Her latest book, At Mama’s Knee: Mothers in Black and White (2016), is a truly explosive look into what mothers really teach their children about race in America, including a look at how to handle the “N” word.
It goes from the White House to every house in America, based on her own personal stories, as a Black mother with two daughters living in her Baltimore hometown. But she also tells stores learned from interviews with iconic Americans, including Presidents Barack Obama and Jimmy Carter, Hillary Clinton, Congressman John Lewis, Congresswoman Barbara Lee, Harry Belafonte, Senator Cory Booker, and Obama White House advisor Valerie Jarrett. Wolf Blitzer, CNN anchor on The Situation Room, calls it “truly amazing — powerful and personal.” The forward is by Chris Matthews, MSNBC anchor of “Hardball.”
The book will be available for purchase and signing.
