Douglas J. Patton, author of The White Guy in the Room: A Political Memoir, will take us on his journey from a young naïve college student from rural Iowa, with little or no knowledge and understanding of African-American history and culture, to a key and seasoned political player in the empowerment of blacks in America. Equally important, he will offer an inside glimpse of the strategic roles of people like him in the civil rights movement. Patton has lived and breathed politics all his life, having consulted on over 20 campaigns of candidates running for public office. He also served as Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development for the District of Columbia, and as an ex-officio representative from the U.S.House of Representatives on the Federal Election Commission for over eighteen years.
Maureen Bunyan, former co-anchor of WJLA-TV will introduce the speaker. She is an Advisory Council member of the International Women’s Media Foundation and a founder of the National Association of Black Journalists.
This is an Educational Foundation Luncheon and proceeds and tax-free donations support the Young Women’s Leadership Program at Columbia Heights Education Campus and Anacostia High School.
