Tues, Aug 4 – Declining Democracy at Home and Abroad
August 4, 2020 @ 10:30 am - 12:00 pm

Democracy and pluralism are under assault around the world. Dictators are stamping out domestic dissent and spreading harmful political influence while many freely elected leaders are using populist rhetoric to whittle down democratic freedoms. In fact, such leaders—including in the US and India—are increasingly willing to break down institutional safeguards and disregard the rights of critics and minorities.
Michael Abramowitz will talk about the alarming global trends to suppress democratic participation, persecute immigrants and religious minorities, and stifle free speech. Freedom House, co-founded by Eleanor Roosevelt in 1941, is an independent watchdog organization dedicated to the expansion of freedom and democracy through research, programs, and advocacy.
Mr. Abramowitz will also address new challenges to democracy and human rights resulting from the coronavirus outbreak including ways that repressive regimes have used the pandemic to serve their political interests, often at the expense of public health and basic freedoms.
