Artist Reception: Sabiha Iqbal

March 2, 2022 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

Join us in-person for this evening program! Bar opens at 6:00pm. Proof of Vaccination Required.
The Visual Arts and Museum Affairs Committee is excited for the opening of our next exhibition, “Where Stars Go to Dream” showcasing the art of Pakistani artist Sabiha Iqbal.
The inspiration for this body of work is the poetry of her mother Ada Jafarey. Born in 1924, she was a prominent figure in contemporary literature in Pakistan. Often hailed as the “First Lady of Urdu Poetry,” she was a feminist, a leader and innovator in her field. Her poetry was strong commentary on the social, political, and cultural events of her times.  Hers was a voice of determination, resilience, and optimism. In her poems, she is relentlessly reaching for the horizon, to escape from the bounds of a conservative unchanging society. Asked to create a painting for the cover of the English translation of her mother’s biography, Sabiha Iqbal began developing this series which blends poetry and painting together.

Sabiha Iqbal was born in Rawalpindi, Pakistan. She earned her Ph.D. in economics from the School of Business and Economics, University of Maryland and taught economics at Montgomery College. Sabiha studied painting at the Corcoran School of Art and Design at George Washington University and the Winter Palace Studio. She has exhibited her work at the Corcoran Gallery, The Watergate Gallery, The Athenaeum, Embassy of Chile and Glenview Mansion Gallery. She lives and maintains her studio practice in the Washington area.
