Earth Day 2022: Rethinking ‘Protection’

Join us in person at the Club or attend via Zoom. At the Club, the bar opens at noon, and lunch is served at 12:30 pm.

On Earth Day this year, sustainability and infrastructure management expert Maureen Koetz will lead us in rethinking environmental protection, asking: why aren’t air, land, and water managed as capital assets? Koetz will describe the history of environmental regulation and propose an alternate approach to preventing environmental degradation—treating air, water, and land as an asset, not as free resources to use and abuse. Corporations and investors understand the principles of asset management for Physical and Financial Capital, including Inventory and Appraisal. Koetz proposes identifying “geocapital” as Public Trust Assets, and that we stop giving them away to private entities for political gain.

With over 30 years of experience, Koetz has pioneered the use of sustainable infrastructure management to inform investment, avoid material risk, improve operability, and secure competitive advantage for both public and private enterprise operations. With a law degree from AU, Maureen has been a Judge Advocate in the US Navy and held several positions in the US Air Force, EPA, and Senate Energy Committee staff. She is currently a consultant on land use and environmental matters.
