As a college student with a strong interest in government and civic engagement, interning at the Woman’s National Democratic Club has been an incredibly fulfilling experience. I joined WNDC this fall to gain practical experience in political advocacy and a deeper understanding of democracy in action. This opportunity has been both impactful and inspiring.
Grassroots Advocacy and Policy Work
During my time at WNDC, I’ve had the privilege of working with two dynamic committees: the Get Out the Vote (GOTV) Committee and the Public Policy and Political Action Committee (PPC).
As a sophomore majoring in international studies and economics, my experience with GOTV, beyond my fields of study, was particularly impactful. It allowed me to witness democracy at work on a grassroots level. By assisting volunteers with letter writing and phone banking, and researching outreach opportunities, I developed a deeper understanding and appreciation for the organizational effort, strategic planning, and creativity required to effectively engage and mobilize voters.
Working with PPC was equally rewarding, as it allowed me to apply my academic knowledge in a real-world setting. Researching policies, updating congressional contact lists, and contributing to policy recommendations gave me insight into the tangible processes that drive legislative change. These tasks challenged me to think critically and engage with complex issues in meaningful ways.
Throughout my internship, I’ve developed not only technical skills like research and communication but also a greater understanding of how grassroots advocacy and policy work intersect to shape our democracy. Despite the election result, this experience has been an eye-opening journey, showing me how I can contribute to creating meaningful change in the future.
Memorable Experiences
A standout moment during my internship was attending the October WNDC members' birthday luncheon. It was an incredible opportunity to meet many Club members, each of them kind, welcoming, and brimming with fascinating stories. Many of the members I spoke with had worked in Washington, D.C., often in fields related to politics and government. Hearing about
their experiences, from their careers in public service to their life journeys, was nothing short of inspiring. What stood out most was the warmth and community at the event. My favorite moment was Stevie Wonder’s lively “Happy Birthday” sung for October birthdays, filling the room with joy and camaraderie. It highlighted the incredible sense of belonging and shared purpose among the members of WNDC.
Growth, Gratitude, and Purpose
As my internship comes to an end, I am deeply grateful for the support and guidance I received at WNDC. I want to thank all the kind members who were so welcoming and made me feel part of this vibrant community. A special thanks to President Rosalyn L. Coates and my supervisors, Mindy Burrell, Kathy Hochman, and Michelle Radecki for their encouragement and dedication to ensuring that my time here was both smooth and enriching. And warm thanks to Pat as well, whose cheerful greetings never failed to brighten my day.
This internship has not only deepened my understanding of grassroots advocacy and policy work but also fueled my passion for making a difference through civic engagement. I leave with a renewed sense of purpose, inspired by the incredible individuals I’ve had the privilege to work alongside. For anyone seeking to grow as a professional while contributing to a meaningful cause, WNDC is an extraordinary place to do so.
