To recover from a presidency that has increased the distrust Americans have for each other and their national government, we need a president with the competence and character we can trust to work for the common good. How should we look for these qualities in a candidate? Some of the competencies needed by an effective president were described centuries ago by Pericles of Athens. Two of America’s greatest presidents, Abraham Lincoln and Franklin Delano Roosevelt, had these competencies in different contexts. By exploring the way they expressed these qualities, we may become better able to find them in a current candidate for the presidency.
