EVENT TYPE: Speaker Reception
Mike Canning, long-time film reviewer for The Capitol Hill monthly news magazine Hill Rag, saw his first film in his hometown of Fargo, ND at the age of four. From that magic moment until now, the “flickers” became Mike’s lifelong avocation.
In Hollywood on the Potomac, Canning, whose first career was serving as press and cultural officer in U.S. embassies for 28 years, takes a look at the nation’s capital’s favorite entertainment pastime, movies. Canning’s talk will use numerous short film-clips to show how Washington, DC, has been portrayed in feature films—some as iconic as “Mr. Smith Goes to Washington” and “All the President’s Men.” Drawing on over 50 motion pictures, the book includes short essays on politics and film, a history of location shooting in DC, and a broad survey of DC-related topics and themes, often funny, always entertaining!
The book will be available for purchase and signing.
PRICE: $20 Members; $25 Non-members. Includes hors d’oeuvres. Cash Bar.
