Tuesday, November 7, 2017 (Evening)

TIME: Bar and buffet open at 5:30pm. Program begins at 6:30pm

EVENT TYPE: Speaker Reception

Alex Berti, a composer, double bass player, and arranger for Gustavo Dudamel’s Simon Bolivar Orchestra and now manager of the DC Youth Orchestra Program’s “Children’s Orchestra,” grew up in Venezuela as one of the first students of José Antonio Abreu’s “El Sistema.” Abreu’s goal was to use learning to perform music in groups as a way to help youth become productive, focused, and engaged and to develop group compassion and solidarity. Berti will describe, with slides, how he is taking the best parts of “El Sistema,” combining it with what works in DC Public Schools, and transforming the lives of young DC students. A group of his Children’s Orchestra students from Title I DC Elementary Schools will perform to demonstrate how his program works.

You won’t want to miss this opportunity to meet a delightful musician and cheer his students on in their dedication to making music together!

This program is co-sponsored by CHIME (Community Help In Music Education) and the Dupont Circle Village.

PRICE: $15 Members and Non-members. Includes buffet. Cash Bar.
