Join WNDC for a short film, “Majority Rules 101,” an informative and entertaining account of the successful use of ranked-choice voting (RCV) in Alaska, followed by a discussion with DC Board of Elections Chair Gary Thompson. We’ll take the mystery out of RCV, which Washington, DC, will introduce in the upcoming June 16 primary election.
The new voting method was approved overwhelmingly by DC voters in a 2024 ballot initiative. Thompson will explain and discuss how RCV will work in DC: For elections that have three or more candidates, voters will be able to rank up to five of them. Through a process of elimination, the candidate who receives a majority of votes will be the winner.
Event Details:
Thompson is an attorney who has committed many hours to pro bono and public interest endeavors, including voting rights cases, for more than 30 years. Among various awards, he has been named DC Bar Pro Bono attorney of the year. Thompson lives in Ward 4 and served for eight years (four as Chair) on the Chevy Chase Advisory Neighborhood Commission. He has a bachelor’s degree from Georgetown University and J.D. from Rutgers University.
