Turkey’s pro-government circles welcomed President Trump’s election, believing he would reverse what they considered adverse policies of the Obama administration: failure to extradite the Pennsylvania-based cleric it accused of fomenting the 2016 failed coup attempt, refusal to stop working with the Syrian Kurdish militia, and failure to drop charges against a Turkish-Iranian gold trader on trial for evading sanctions on Iran. Those hopes were soon dashed, and US-Turkish relations under President Trump went through one of its worst crises ever. Tol will discuss whether or not 2018 will bring more tension to a relationship once hailed as a “strategic partnership.”
