It’s been more than a year since Facebook fed us ads from Russians attempting to influence our election, two months since Mark Zuckerberg testified before Congress, and just days since Facebook announced its largest reorganization to date. Over two billion people use the application every month. Serious issues with Facebook have been raised, including foreigners influencing election outcomes, people spreading rumors and vitriol to fuel genocide and hate crimes, and advertising to minors who process information differently.
This week Facebook announced a major reorganization of its product teams. Among 15 top individuals, there is only one woman — responsible for “integrity” among other things (cue jokes) — and no women of color. As noted feminist journalist Soraya Chemaly wrote, “Facebook can’t claim to be trying. We can’t talk about risks to society represented by social media without talking about this insane lack of inclusion.”
