Please join us at the WNDC for a special event celebrating "A Seat at the Table: The Making of Busboys and Poets," the inspiring new book by activist, artist, social entrepreneur, and WNDC member Andy Shallal. Shallal will share the story of how he founded and transformed a single restaurant in Washington, D.C. into a cultural and political hub where activism, art, and community intersect. This event will explore the themes of the book with engaging conversation, meaningful connections, and a celebration of local voices.
Named in honor of poet Langston Hughes, who once worked as a busboy while writing verse, Busboys and Poets grew from one man’s vision into a beloved space for progressive thought and creative expression. Shallal will discuss how his roots, values, and a belief in the power of gathering around food shaped a space that has welcomed Barack Obama, Angela Davis, Alice Walker, Ralph Nader, Jesse Jackson, and many more activists and artists.
EVENT DETAILS: Shallal opened the first Busboys and Poets location in 2005 as part restaurant, part agent for social change. All Busboys and Poets locations continue to operate as a community gathering space where art, culture, and politics intentionally collide over mindfully sourced food, drinks, books, and event programming. With eight locations, Busboys and Poets focuses on sustainable business initiatives and employment practices. Busboys locations are 100% wind-powered and have been recognized locally and nationally for their innovative, conscious cuisine. Under Shallal’s leadership, Busboys has received numerous awards including the Mayor’s Arts Award, Employer of the Year from the Employment Justice Center, Washingtonian of the Year, and the Mayor’s Environmental Award among others.
Shallal is a 2018 Frederick Douglass 200 award winner for those who best embody Douglass’ spirit. He is a TedX speaker, founder of several peace and justice organizations, and board member of the Institute for Policy Studies, Palestine House of Freedom, DAWN, the Anacostia Coordinating Council, and Think Local First DC, a local business association serving in advisory and leadership roles to advance progressive business and labor practices. Shallal received his BS in biology from Catholic University and an MBA from the University of Maryland. *Please note: Guests, with the exception of members’ spouses and domestic partners, may attend a maximum of three paid events from July 1, 2025, to June 30, 2026. After the third event, they must join the Club to continue attending events.* |
