Join Virginia Lt. Gov. Ghazala Hashmi for a discussion of Virginia’s emergence as a powerful example of representative democracy and inclusive leadership in America. Once the capital of the Confederacy, Virginia has transformed into a state that increasingly reflects the democratic ideals embodied in the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights.
For the first time since 1994, Democrats hold Virginia's executive office, senate, and the house of delegates, creating new opportunities to shape policy, expand rights, and strengthen democratic institutions. Hashmi will discuss what this political moment means for the Commonwealth, the challenges ahead, and how Virginia can serve as a model for progressive leadership and civic engagement nationwide.
EVENT DETAILS:
Lt. Gov. Hashmi was sworn in on January 17, 2026, making history as the first Muslim woman elected statewide in the U.S. and the first South Asian American elected to statewide office in Virginia. Previously, she served in the Virginia State Senate representing the 15th District, where she focused on public education, health care access, reproductive freedom, and economic opportunity. Before entering elected office, she spent decades teaching in Virginia’s community college system and advocating for students and workforce development.
