Join the Woman’s National Democratic Club in exploring the network of organizations working to ensure access to reproductive health care. Our expert panel will be moderated by Heather Booth, a leading feminist, civil rights activist, and founder of the Jane Collective -- an underground organization that provided illegal abortion services in Chicago from 1969 until abortion was legalized in 1973. Panelists include Serra Sippel, executive director of The Brigid Alliance, which supports thousands of individuals traveling for abortion care each year; Dr. Serina Floyd, chief medical officer at Planned Parenthood of Metropolitan Washington D.C.; and Brittany Fonteno, CEO of the National Abortion Federation (NAF).
This timely conversation will highlight the “ecosystem of care” that has emerged across the country—where advocacy groups, medical providers, and logistical support organizations work together to help individuals navigate increasingly complex barriers to access. The program will explore how financial assistance, travel coordination, and wraparound support services are making it possible for thousands of people to obtain safe and timely care, even as abortion rights are rolled back nationwide.
EVENT DETAILS:
Booth is one of the leading strategists about progressive issues and electoral campaigns. She has been an organizer starting in the civil rights, anti-Vietnam War and women’s movements of the 1960s and continuing through today. She created JANE, an underground abortion service started before Roe. She was the founding Director and is now President of the Midwest Academy, training social change leaders and organizers. She has been involved in political campaigns and was the Training Director of the Democratic National Committee. In 2009, she directed the campaign passing President Obama’s first budget. In 2010, she was the founding director of Americans for Financial Reform, fighting to regulate the financial industry. She was Field Director for Americans for Tax Fairness to stop the tax cuts for millionaires that could lead to cuts in Medicare, Medicaid, and education. She was the Director for Progressive and Senior Outreach for the Biden for President campaign.
Sippel is the Executive Director of The Brigid Alliance, one of the nation’s leading abortion support organizations that provides individualized, all-inclusive travel, financial, and logistical support for people who are forced to travel long distances to access abortion care. Since joining the Brigid Alliance in 2023, Serra has led the organization through significant growth, strengthening and expanding its capacity to support abortion seekers across the U.S., Puerto Rico, and beyond. Serra serves as a member of the Advisory Council of Reproductive Futures, an innovative policy organization that brings legal expertise to craft strategic interventions to expand abortion access. For more than 25 years, Serra has advanced gender equality and sexual and reproductive health, rights and justice (SRHRJ) in the U.S. and globally. She served as president of CHANGE (Center for Health and Gender Equity) for more than 15 years, and in 2021, co-founded Fòs Feminista, a Global South-led feminist international alliance for SRHRJ, through the merger of CHANGE with two other women’s rights non-profits.
Floyd is a board certified obstetrician-gynecologist and the Chief Medical Officer at Planned Parenthood of Metropolitan Washington, DC. For over 20 years Dr. Floyd’s work has centered on advancing socially just, equitable access to comprehensive sexual and reproductive health care. She has held extensive clinical and academic leadership roles, has served as an expert on numerous regional and national committees, and provides an expert voice in policy development, media, and national advocacy efforts.
Fonteno is the President and CEO of the National Abortion Federation – the leading national professional association of abortion providers – and the National Abortion Hotline – the largest patient assistance fund in the U.S. Brittany is a seasoned strategist, advocate, and leader with nearly 20 years of experience in the movement for sexual and reproductive health, rights, and justice. Her work focuses on achieving health and racial equity for all people by bringing the most marginalized communities to the center of sexual and reproductive health care. She previously served as the President & CEO of Planned Parenthood Arizona—the state’s largest provider of sexual and reproductive health care, education, and advocacy—and Planned Parenthood Advocates of Arizona—PPAZ’s political and advocacy arm. She led the organization during one of the most perilous times for reproductive freedom, as the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade and dismantled the federal right to abortion. Under Brittany’s leadership, Planned Parenthood in Arizona fought back against a total abortion ban, including co-founding the successful effort to enshrine abortion rights in the state’s constitution. Brittany has appeared in media outlets including CNN, ABC, Time, The New York Times, The Washington Post, Bloomberg, Fortune, and Axios.
