“This body of work, “In The Forests of the Night”, is inspired by my childhood trips to the beautiful mangrove forests of the Sunderbans located in the Bay of Bengal (Indian Ocean). This region is also the natural habitat of the Royal Bengal tiger. In the 1960s, it was a forest wilderness which remains unchanged in my memories.

Providing glimpses of the deep forest, with not a living soul in sight, has a sense of peace and mystery for me as we don’t know what could be lurking in the dark.

My painting process is time-consuming – consisting of the application of many layers of liquid acrylic paint – wet onto dry. I use this process of layering, flatness of form and?color to create a sense of depth and subtle chromatic variation within the work.

In most of my works, I use a restricted color palette with intense colors inspired by my South Asian background.”
